Signal Timing Optimization
TCN staff have experience in developing timing plans for isolated intersections, downtown pre-timed grids, and major urban arterials. Some projects have included interjurisdictional agreements data sharing between agencies.
In developing traffic signal coordination and timing plans, TCN utilizes computer software such as Synchro and SimTraffic. Such software is often used in combination to determine the best solution. Tools such as these allow TCN to fine-tune timing plans before they are downloaded to the system. TCN translates the computer analysis output into timing sheet type formats suitable for agency field implementation. TCN can also assist client agencies in implementing signal timing changes and performing field fine-tuning of signal plans.
TCN utilizes a wide variety of other techniques to maximize the system throughput and efficiency. Some of these include:
- Installing lead-lag left turn phasing to remove the "kinks" from time-space diagrams
- Conversion of left turn phasing from protected to protected-permissive to allow more efficient use of the splits
- Elimination of unwarranted split phasing
- Use of actuated-coordinated features to shift unused phase times to other phases
- Allowing pedestrian actuations to exceed cycle length where usual pedestrian times would be otherwise detrimental.
